On 21st December 2016 the Court of Justice of European Union rendered its ruling in the joint cases C-203/15 Tele2 Sverige AB/ Post-ochtelestyrelsen and C-698/15 Secretary of State for the Home Department/Tom Watson and others. The cases regarded the obligation of retention of data on a side of telecoms. In its ruling the CJEU ruled against a possibility of existence of any common, general obligation to retain such data, and by deciding so the CJEU stood on the side of strong protection of protection of personal data in the EU also in the cases involving security.
